Chapter 27
Introductions
Rita Shor
I
t was a simple string of numbers that the Abu Jahim AI auditor wouldnât be able to detect on any banned words or information lists. The numbers were too short to be lottery numbers, contained symbols that matched no social security identification, and were far too long to be an incomplete street address. There was no reason for them to be blacked out.
That simple string of numbers held the coordinates to the most important social gathering of the Isulum Kani, and Iâd convinced a young, impressionable girl to give them to me. And in turn, I simply left the letter out, open on my bed.
Alvira said that way I was guiltless, but convincing myself of that was impossible.
Who would spare Donara Sokolo of whatever would come? Alvira never made it clear. Instead, she met with a so-called reporter, and they whispered through iron bars in Yaku.
I traced the raised bumps of the Ishti tribal scar Alvira had given me. Then, with a sigh, I notified the guards that I was open to an interview with The Daily.
It wasnât long after that that Alvira was taken by Waseda guards.
âWe warned you about tattooing inmates in the Ishti way,â the guard said. âYouâre getting two weeks in solitary.â
Alviraâs guttural screams made my heart flutter in fear as the Waseda guards threw open her cell and dragged her out.
âShe canât be left alone. Sheâs just gotten back. Rita!â She called, thrashing, and flailing as the guards carried her out. âYou have to protect her. RITA!â The following days were filled with waiting and dread. Until at last, the day came. I paced my cell, wringing my hands together, awaiting Sana ÄumiÄâs arrival.
I glanced down at my legs. They looked thinner than they ought. Iâd been dropping weight since my return due to the pains that had persisted and a lasting taste on my tongue. Iron, I still tasted bloody, Sokolo elixir every time I ate, and the bland prison food wasnât masking the taste.
I hissed a breath in, clasping my hand to my jaw. The shooting pain in my jaw felt like it was getting worse. To distract me and calm my nerves, I moved to my bed and read Donara Sokoloâs most recent response.
